Advent Revelation – Jesus is worthy

Normally we think of judgement as a bad thing. We fear judgement, or we get angry at the prospect of being judged. But there’s real comfort in knowing that God will judge, even if that means he’s going to judge us because it shows that God is sovereign. He rules, he reigns; not all of the sin and consequences of sin that plague our world.

The good news of Mark’s gospel story is that because Jesus bore those accusations, we don’t have to. The good news of Mark’s gospel story is that we can be forgiven, more than that; our sins atoned for, paid for, our debt cleared and so there is no longer an accusation to be levelled against us.

Dealing with denial.

Have we denied Jesus, have we been working against him in some way (often a daft way), and we know the result is that we are broken people? Jesus has been struck for us, he has gone ahead of us and if we would simply meet him, allow him to ask us if we love him, the healing, release, and potential that wells up within us will be incredible, because of what he has done for us.

Jesus’ kingship and lordship is more about recognising his holiness, his righteousness, his glory, the pleasure the Father has taken in him, in other words Jesus’ kingship is about giving him our worship because we recognise that he is Jesus, he is the Christ, he is the Lord.

What do our offerings say about our faith in God?

The offering, our tithe, our harvest contributions, the United Appeal or Tearfund lunch are all for our benefit. They are part of our worship because they teach us to trust God. We are called to give, not just what we can afford, but the first fruits, the best of our harvest, the best of our wages, time, the best from our larder because we need to learn to believe in God. To have faith in him.

If Jesus is not our passion, then there will come a time when the thing or person we are passionate about will claim our complete devotion, because we cannot be devoted to two things, two people.
